Role Overview

The Migration Partner Delivery Tech Lead is the senior technical delivery leader accountable for the architecture, planning, governance, and successful execution of complex AWS migration engagements. The role combines hands-on migration expertise with customer-facing technical leadership, delivery governance, commercial awareness, and responsibility for guiding multidisciplinary teams.

The Migration DTL serves as a primary point of technical accountability for customers, AWS stakeholders, delivery managers, architects, and partner consultants. The successful candidate must be able to lead technical teams of mixed seniority, own architecture decisions, communicate with executive stakeholders, translate technical risks into business impacts, and maintain delivery momentum across infrastructure, application, database, security, identity, and networking workstreams.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Technical and Architectural Leadership

• Own the end-to-end technical direction and architecture of AWS migration engagements.
• Lead application and infrastructure portfolio discovery, assessment, dependency analysis, and migration planning.
• Direct portfolio rationalization using the 7Rs and determine the appropriate migration strategy for each workload.
• Create migration wave plans that consider workload dependencies, business constraints, technical complexity, downtime tolerance, resource availability, and rollback requirements.
• Define repeatable migration factory patterns for large-scale migration programs.
• Lead technical design decisions involving compute, storage, databases, networking, security, identity, observability, backup, and disaster recovery.
• Guide teams through rehost, relocate, replatform, repurchase, refactor, retain, and retire decisions.
• Review and approve technical designs, implementation approaches, cutover plans, rollback plans, and architecture decision records.
• Ensure the target environment and landing zone are ready before workloads are migrated.
• Identify situations requiring specialist support, particularly for application modernization, containers, analytics, mainframes, or AI/ML workloads.
  
  

Migration Planning and Execution

• Lead discovery-to-wave-planning activities for enterprise application and server portfolios.
• Define migration scope, workload groupings, sequencing, entry and exit criteria, and cutover readiness requirements.
• Oversee the use of migration discovery and planning tools, including AWS Application Discovery Service and appropriate third-party discovery platforms.
• Own the technical use of AWS Application Migration Service for lift-and-shift workloads.
• Coordinate database migration strategies using AWS Database Migration Service, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Aurora.
• Direct hybrid connectivity and network readiness activities involving Amazon VPC, AWS Transit Gateway, AWS Direct Connect, routing, IP address planning, and DNS resolution.
• Coordinate data transfer, staging, synchronization, and archival requirements.
• Lead cutover planning, DNS transition, technical validation, rollback decision-making, and post-migration stabilization.
• Define observability, compliance, backup, security posture, patching, and disaster recovery requirements for migrated workloads.
  
  

Customer and Stakeholder Leadership

• Act as a senior customer-facing technical leader and a primary point of accountability for technical delivery.
• Build trusted relationships with customer executives, enterprise architects, infrastructure leaders, application owners, security teams, and operational stakeholders.
• Facilitate technical and business discussions with CTO, CISO, CFO, and other executive stakeholders when required.
• Translate architectural constraints, dependencies, risks, and delivery issues into clear business-impact statements.
• Present technical options, trade-offs, recommendations, and decisions in language appropriate for both technical and executive audiences.
• Challenge or redirect unsuitable customer technical decisions while maintaining a constructive working relationship.
• Establish measurable technical success criteria and a shared definition of done before implementation begins.
• Coordinate security, networking, infrastructure, identity, database, and application teams that may not report directly to the DTL.
  
  

Delivery Governance and Commercial Management

• Establish and maintain the technical delivery governance model for the engagement.
• Own or contribute to weekly status reporting, RAID management, dependency tracking, escalation paths, architecture decisions, and change control.
• Identify delivery risks early, determine mitigation actions, and escalate issues with a clear explanation of business impact.
• Manage technical scope and identify requests that require formal scope-change evaluation.
• Contribute to Statements of Work, level-of-effort estimates, delivery assumptions, staffing plans, technical dependencies, and acceptance criteria.
• Monitor the relationship between effort sold, effort consumed, remaining scope, and expected completion.
• Work closely with Delivery Project Managers, Engagement Managers, Chief Architects, AWS consultants, partner consultants, and customer technical teams.
• Support Agile or Scrum delivery through backlog prioritization, sprint planning, technical reviews, stand-ups, and blocker removal.
  
  

Team Leadership

• Lead customer-facing delivery teams with multiple technical disciplines and mixed levels of seniority.
• Set technical priorities, clarify responsibilities, allocate work, remove blockers, and protect the team from unnecessary delivery churn.
• Provide technical coaching and mentoring to consultants.
• Review the quality and completeness of technical deliverables.
• Ensure that delegated implementation work remains aligned with the approved architecture.
• Maintain accountability for technical decisions rather than delegating architectural judgment to the delivery team.
• Promote reusable migration patterns, delivery standards, lessons learned, and continuous improvement.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Proven expertise designing AWS Landing Zone architectures and multi-account environments
• Strong command of AWS networking, security, IAM, and governance frameworks
• Track record leading VMware-to-AWS migration programs, including workload assessment and strategy selection (rehost, replatform, refactor)
• Hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK)
• Experience leading complex, production-grade migration cutovers
• Strong stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration skills across application, infrastructure, security, and networking teams
• Solid documentation practices, covering architecture decisions, runbooks, and operational standards

Gaps in specialized areas such as AI/ML, analytics, or containerization may be acceptable, provided the candidate recognizes when specialist support is required.
